At the KAZ Minerals Annual Geotechnical Forum, the School of Mining and Geosciences (NU SMG) was well-represented by six proactive students who presented their research, actively contributing to the industry's discourse.

The NU School of Mining and Geosciences (NU SMG), in collaboration with KAZ Minerals, hosted the Annual Geotechnical Forum from September 26 to 27, 2024. Geotechnical engineers from key copper mines of KAZ Minerals, a leading mining company, participated in the forum to exchange ideas on mining operations, including open-pit and underground deposits. They also explored related fields such as hydrogeology, tailings storage facilities, and the use of artificial intelligence.  NU SMG students, under the guidance of Professors Fidelis Suorineni and Ali Mortazavi, presented their research based on real-world data.

"I am the first SMG graduate who completed my Masters in Mining Engineering. Studying was difficult, but the professors were always supportive and motivating. Now, I work at KAZ Minerals' head office. At NU, for the first time, we are holding an internal geotechnical forum for engineers from almost all of our six mines to share experience and network, which is important for professional development. For students, it is an opportunity to see and learn how production works," said Nursulu Alnazar, Geotechnical Engineer at KAZ Minerals Management.

The School of Mining and Geosciences (NU SMG) maintains ties to the industry by inviting industry experts to lecture, providing internships for students and training from professors for industry employees.

"There is a long history of cooperation between SMG and Minerals, especially with Professors Fidelis Suorineni and Ali Mortazavi, who share their experience and expertise, and students intern with us. This kind of cooperation is important for students to prepare for industry work. Nazarbayev University students are well-versed in analytical work and complex modern technologies, so they easily adapt their knowledge to the current demands of the industry," said Bayuprima Adiyansyah, geotechnical superintendent at KAZ Minerals Bozshakol.

The forum also included a tour of the school's laboratories, such as drilling simulation, rock mechanics, mineral processing, mine ventilation, and drilling fluids labs. International experts attending the event, including principal geotechnical engineers from Australia, Dr. Neil Bar and Glen Balog, praised the school's technical and educational capabilities.
